What many people don't realize is that many of the "orphans" in Haiti are actually children who have parents, but have been abandoned because their families are too poor to care for them.  Those not lucky enough to be put in an orphanage are often sold or given to other families, who use them as domestic slaves, called "restavek."   This is the fate of thousands of poor children in Haiti.  Most come from villages like Titanyen.  Your sponsorship dollars help to protect children from this fate, and provide them with a better future.

This practice is also used in very poor African countries.  It leads to several serious medical problems.  Some medical professionals estimate that 80% of the poor children of Haiti have internal parasites, mainly because of this practice.
